The OPEIU Nurses Honor Guard recognizes and honors women and men who have dedicated their lives to the nursing profession. The Honor Guard pays tribute to individuals at the time of their death by attending the funeral or memorial services and reciting the Nightingale Tribute dressed in the traditional white uniform complete with cape and cap. There is a presentation of a white rose which signifies the nurse’s devotion to his or her profession. There is also a ceremonial roll call and the family is given the Nightingale lamp of Learning. It is a moving ceremony that speaks to the dedication nurses have to selflessly helping others.
